NatureNet Europe

NatureNet Europe – ECNC, EUCC and EUROSITE work towards a common organisation

The concept of a European Coastal and Marine Ecological Network was first developed by the EUCC and launched at the ECC-Conference (1991). It was considered necessary to develop a coherent network consisting of core nature areas, rehabilitation areas and landscape features, necessary for the survival of the whole range of coastal species and their habitats. This network should be based upon an understanding of important species, their populations and their habitats and of the important relations between them.

EUCC is partner in NatureNet Europe, in which the EECONET programme aims to speed up the identification of the location of the European ecological network on a map, to increase international and cross-border cooperation between countries and regions, to safeguard important nature areas, and to inform the public via EECONET actions for relevant species and areas.

Published EUCC Reports

European Coastal and Marine Ecological Network (1996-99)
In September 1998, the EUCC published the ECMEN report which presented amongst other things a new typology of European coastlines (landscapes, formations and habitats). Download in PDF

Pan-European Coastal and Marine Ecological Corridors (1999)
As a follow-up to ECMEN, the EUCC drew up recommendations to the member states to improve the protection of corridors which are used by many animal species to migrate from one important area in their life cycle to another. Download in PDF
