EUCC is closely collaborating with NGOs in Ukraine
to establish the Dnester Delta as a National Park. This is being
done through the implementation of field conservation projects focusing
mainly on restoration of the wetlands hydrology, reforestation of
selected areas and awareness-raising activities. In so doing, the
natural values of several important coastal areas have already been
restored.
The work has also helped to strengthen the co-operation of local
NGO's and communities whose support for the National Park has grown
over the years. The regional government and the Odessa County Council
have now decided to establish a National Park with an area of 21,400
ha. At the moment, the Ministry of Ecology and Nature Resources
of the Ukraine are preparing all the documents that are necessary
to adopt the law.
Similar conservation actions being done in Moldova are, further,
a part of the lobby for the establishment of the Lower Dnester National
Park. Once both National Parks are established, a Trans-border Biosphere
Reserve will be the next logical step.
